Why do we have Bomb Techs?

What does the need for highly trained  Bomb Techs tell us about our society?

Our son-in-law is a Bomb Tech for a large Metropolitan city Police Department, and much of the western part of a large state. We are very proud of him.

This morning (March 8, 2025) Breitbart carried a news story about a WW2 bomb recently discovered in Paris. It told of the major disruption to traffic and the impact on the daily lives of many unsuspecting folks.

The bomb was described as “excessively dangerous” and it disrupted traffic as far away as London and Brussels.

The news service said …”disposal experts managed to unscrew and then destroy its fuse, ‘like you see in the movies,’ said Christophe Pezron, who heads the Paris police laboratory that includes bomb disposal services.”

I texted the link to my son-in-law, and he responded with a note telling me he had trained with Techs from the Netherlands who, every day, worked on un-exploded WW2 ordinance, both on land and in water.

Off for more training

It gave me cause to think. What does it say about a more modern and supposedly civilized society that it needs Bomb-Techs.

It brought to mind a message I heard decades ago at First Southern Baptist Church in Del City OK. Dr. Tom Elliff was Pastor at the time. He made the statement “every key you have in your pocket is a sign we live in a fallen world.”

That’s also true of Bomb Techs. It would be one thing if Bomb Techs’ sole task was un-exploded WW2 ordinance, but that’s not the case.  Society doesn’t seem to be moving in a positive direction, and there is a whole new generation of crazies out there to deal with. We need Bomb Techs because our world is a fallen one.

An actual call-out in the snow

Bomb Techs are an underappreciated group. They risk life and limb every time they take the long walk toward a device whose only, and increasingly high-tech purpose, is to destroy society.

If you happen to see a Bomb Tech let him or her know you appreciate them and what they do. But, they are very hard to spot. They purposely do not seek publicity. They may even look like a police officer, a sheriff’s deputy, a Marine, a Soldier or Sailor.

Oh, one more point. Bomb Techs are excellent at repairing dishwashers. I know this from personal experience. I wasn’t even required to stand at a safe distance.

Have a safe day….
