John 19:28 Jesus has been on the cross all day. He is tired and dehydrated but His journey is coming to an end. When He says He’s thirsty they mock Him by offering sour wine. In vs 30 Jesus says “It is finished!” He means His mission to be the sacrificial
Lamb for mankind- to pay the penalty for our sins-has been accomplished. Jesus is now dead.
And this is unusual. It could take hours, sometimes days, for people to die from cruxifixion. The religious leaders needed to prepare for the Passover and they didn’t have that much time. So they asked Pilate to have the victims’ legs broken to speed up the process. But the soldiers see that Jesus is already dead so they simply spear Him in the side just to assure the crowd. Once again, this is no accident. These three acts fulfill three Old Testament prophecies that were written hundreds of years earlier—Psalm 69:21, Psalm 34:20, & Zechariah 12:10
Yes God had planned this day ever since the beginning of time. Jesus had talked about it with his disciples many times but they didn’t understand Him. So they’re all caught by surprise and are devastated. But not Jesus. As He said in John 12:27 this is why He came- to pay the death penalty for me and for you. Amazing Grace!
““Now my soul is deeply troubled. Should I pray, ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But this is the very reason I came!”
