A pleasant surprise…

A pleasant surprise.

A grandson from Scotland, and I were killing some time in Wichita as we waited on others of our group who were doing more serious shopping.

I thought we’d make a quick stop at Barnes and Noble, so I set my Google Maps (I’m from the country) for Barnes and Noble over on the east side of town.

As we pulled away from BestBuy awaiting instructions from Google, my Grandson excitedly said, “There’s a Barnes and Noble right over there!”

I was sure he had seen something resembling Barnes and Noble in the distance but I knew there was only the one over east. I suggested it possibly had been a Barnes and Noble but was now closed. You know the news is constantly reminding us about businesses closing. A bookstore of all things certainly faces many economic pressures.

In addition I was somewhat familiar with this shopping complex as my wife shops in several nearby stores. I was certain there was no Barnes and Noble. Plus he’s from a foreign country how could he know?

But I humored him, and against the commands of that Google direction lady, I drove in his suggested direction.

And there it was! We went in.

It was amazingly new looking. I purchased a couple of books. The young man checking me out told us they had opened last November. So to someone from the country, it was a new store!

In the face of all the bad economic news we are bombarded with, it was like a breath of fresh air.

Thank you Barnes and Noble for going against the grain.

So fellow bookstore visitors, do your best to help this economy. Stop in at 2441 N. Maize Road Suite 601, Wichita, KS 67205, and have a cup of coffee at least.
