It’s a very chilly, rainy (finally) afternoon, so I put the fire on and grabbed my book. I’m working my way slowly through The Reformation by Will Durant. It’s heavy reading both literally, and figuratively.
As I turned to my bookmark, I read these words; “Of the numerous middle class only a fringe remained. Above it were luxurious nobles and prelates gorgeously garbed who had learned nothing from history and had forgotten everything but their privileges.”
I thought “wait a minute,” surely Mr Durant is somehow writing about today. So I checked, and sure enough he’s still back in the.Middle Ages. Turns out, he’s speaking of the Byzantine Empire in the late 13th century.
Maybe history does repeat itself.
